On This Day
April 10, 2025
On this day, a rabbit ran into the woods, and a policeman helped a family of ducks cross an intersection. Baby flounder, croakers, and blue crabs were caught in nets in a class showing the treasures under the surface of Mobile Bay.
A trombone was carried along the highway by a man wearing overalls. Nearby, a woman with a yellow bandana around her long brown hair leaned over and looked at the engine of her black Mustang on the side of the road.
A sign that once read "flea market" is now just "flea." "Fresh & Sweet Watermelon" was written on a neon pink and green poster board. A mattress was carried into a trailer–slanted to get through the door.
An almost full moon rose as Willie Nelson sang "Whiskey River" and "Stay a Little Longer." The crowd sang mamas don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys…let ‘em be doctors and lawyers and such.
Then Willie sang a song he released last year:
I'm the last leaf on the tree
The autumn took the rest
But it won't take me
I'm the last leaf on the tree
When the autumn wind blows, they're already gone
They flutter to the ground, they just can't hang on
When there's nothing in this world that I ain't seen
I greet all the new ones that are coming in green
I'm the last leaf on the tree....
I fight off the snow, I fight off the hail
Nothing makes me go, I'm like some vestigial tail
I'll be here through eternity, if you wanna know how long
If they cut down this tree, I'll show up in a song
All on this day
